Choosing a format

Group vs private swimming lessons: which is right for your child?

Both group and private lessons can produce strong swimmers. The better choice depends on personality, goals, budget and how much individual attention you need right now. This guide compares the formats as we deliver them at Swims Away.

What group lessons offer

Group lessons provide structured progression through Swim England stages in an ability-matched class. Children learn alongside peers, which often boosts motivation, listening skills and healthy competition. Monthly pricing makes ongoing learning predictable for many families.

Groups work especially well when a child enjoys others nearby, benefits from classroom-style routines, and is making steady progress without needing constant one-to-one correction.

What private tuition offers

Private sessions focus teaching time on one swimmer, or a very small ratio such as 1-to-2 or 1-to-3. Teachers can adapt pace, revisit skills and keep sensitive or returning swimmers in a quieter setting. Families often choose private tuition for catch-up after a break, exam pressure periods, or targeted technique work.

Private lessons are charged per session or in blocks, which suits short-term goals as well as longer programmes.

When to prefer group

Choose group if your child is broadly on track for their stage, thrives with classmates, and you want a clear weekly rhythm tied to badges and progression. Group also builds social comfort in busy pool environments similar to school swimming. See our children's lessons page for how ability groups run.

When to prefer private (or mix both)

Choose private if anxiety, attention needs or a skill gap make a full group feel too much for now. Many families use a short private block, then join a group once confidence returns. Others keep a group place and book occasional private top-ups before competitions or holidays.

Adult learners who feel self-conscious in a group sometimes start privately, then move into adult group classes when ready.

How we help you decide

Tell us the swimmer’s age, experience, personality and preferred venues when you enquire. We will suggest group, private or a blend based on what will move them forward without overwhelm. You can compare formats in more detail on our lessons and private tuition pages, then book from the contact form.
