Also known as Adult & Child classes in the Swim England framework, these lessons are designed for babies and toddlers who are not yet ready for independent teaching. A parent or guardian stays in the pool throughout.

Classes

What parent and baby lessons involve

A qualified instructor leads the session while you support your child in the water. Activities are gentle and play-based: splashing, floating with support, familiarisation with the pool environment and simple movements that build early water skills.

Classes help children become comfortable with water on their face, with submersion introduced gradually and only when both parent and child are ready. The atmosphere is relaxed and supportive, with no pressure to progress faster than your little one needs.

Many parents value the one-to-one bonding time in the pool as much as the swimming skills themselves. Sessions also introduce basic water safety awareness from an early age.

Ages

Ages, stages and progression

Parent and baby classes are suitable from 3 months to 3 years. At this stage, a parent or guardian must be in the water with their child for every lesson.

The aim is to familiarise children with the pool and surrounding environment, building basic water confidence and skills that prepare them for Stage 1 of the Learn to Swim programme. In Stage 1, the teacher takes the lead in the water and parents watch from poolside while children build independence.

When your child is ready, they can move into children's swimming lessons and continue through Swim England Stages 1–10.

Benefits

Why start baby swimming lessons early?

Starting from 3 months helps children grow up comfortable around water rather than fearful of it. Early exposure supports coordination, strength and confidence, and establishes a positive routine around pool visits that can last a lifetime.

For families in Bolton, Leigh, Wigan, Chorley and across Greater Manchester, baby swimming lessons are a popular first step before formal learn-to-swim stages. Many of our swimmers have been with Swims Away from baby classes through to advanced coaching.

Help and Support

Frequently asked questions

When should my baby start swimming lessons?

Classes are suitable from 3 months, once you and your health visitor are happy for your baby to attend pool sessions. There is no upper age limit within the parent-and-child programme before moving to Stage 1, though most swimmers transition around 3 years.

Do I need to get in the water with my baby?

Yes. A parent or guardian joins their child in the pool for every parent and baby lesson. This continues until your child is ready for independent Stage 1 classes.

What should we bring to a baby swimming lesson?

A swim nappy (and ideally a neoprene cover), your child's swimwear, a towel and your own swimwear. Goggles are not usually needed at this stage. Your instructor can advise on any venue-specific requirements when you book.
