Typical starting ages
Swim England Adult and Child style lessons are designed for babies and toddlers who are not yet ready for independent teaching. At Swims Away, parent and baby sessions generally suit little ones from around 3 months, once your health visitor or GP is happy for them to swim.
There is no single perfect week to start. Some families begin soon after routine vaccinations and the first months of settling; others wait until their baby is more curious about water play. What matters most is that a parent or guardian stays in the pool and that the class feels calm rather than rushed.
Why early water confidence helps
Early sessions are less about stroke technique and more about familiarity: feeling supported in water, gentle floating with help, splashing play and bonding with you in a warm, supervised environment. That foundation often makes the move into children’s Learn to Swim stages smoother later.
Lessons also give parents practical habits: how to hold their child safely, when to pause if a baby is tired or unsettled, and how to keep first visits short and positive.
What to expect in a parent and baby class
A qualified instructor leads the session while you support your child in the water. Activities are play-based and age-appropriate. You will usually change and shower at the venue, bring a swim nappy plus backup, and follow any pool hygiene guidance the school shares before your first visit.
Session length and group size are kept appropriate for babies. If your child needs a break, that is normal. Consistency over a few weeks usually builds comfort faster than occasional one-off visits.
Where we run baby and nursery sessions
Availability depends on lane space and instructor diaries. Ecclestone Pool in Chorley is a strong option for nursery and baby-focused sessions. We can also advise whether a Bolton venue has suitable Adult and Child style availability when you enquire.
Residents-only sites are not marketed as public baby venues. When you contact us, tell us your baby’s age, any medical notes worth sharing, and whether Chorley or Bolton is easier to reach.
When to move on from baby lessons
As toddlers grow more independent and ready to learn without a parent in the water, we discuss moving into children's group lessons grouped by ability, not only by age. That transition is paced to the child: some move earlier with confidence; others benefit from a little longer in Adult and Child sessions or a short block of private tuition.
